Kluana Lake, Yukon

Mile 5720

Cottonwood Campground.  This was absolutely my favorite campground.  We set up our tent right next to the lake and had mountains with snow all around us.  We bought goodies in the camp store and fixed dinner over the open fire.  The campground had a grand shower with plenty of hot water.  Cottonwood Campground is at the very top of my list of favorite places to camp.

Yes, it was cold but the fire was a perfect way to end a long day of riding.  The fire combined with the setting sun, a full belly and a hot shower and I was just about ready for the sleeping bag.  As you can see here the date stamp changed.  It is just past midnight!  Look at the light around me.

Chicken, Alaska

Mile 6019

This is the big town of Chicken.  I fell in love with this place.  What you see in the photo is it!  Ralph and I bellied up to the bar quickly.  I sampled every flavor of Mike’s Hard Lemonade and Ralph drank beer.  We ate thick homemade hamburgers and cherry pie with ice cream from the café.  We ended up setting up the tent in the parking lot as we were exhausted and there was too much alcohol on board.

I left my 12 year old hat stapled to the ceiling in the bar.  I thought it was a special way and a special place to retire the old worn out hat that my son, Perry, had given me years ago.

The view from Taylor Highway heading back south out of Chicken to reconnect with the Alaskan Highway.  I believe the big white mountain in the distance is Denali.  There was a forest fire in this area the prior year that burned 6 million acres.  As a result of the fire, Morel mushrooms were in abundance and the burned out area was covered with mushroom hunters filling sacks and crates.
